Since you’re having a day off, why don’t you take a look at someone else’s day off? This movie revolves around Ferris Bueller, who ditches school while his principal is trying his best to catch his lies.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a movie full of entertainment and emotions and gives you a lot of nostalgia. It is a timeless classic, and no matter which year you watch it or how old you are, it will be relevant and funny.

Grease is set in the 1950s. It revolves around Sandy Olsson, a good girl, and greaser Danny Zuko. They’ve had a lovely summer together and are sad to see it come to a close. The first day of school approaches, and Danny has no idea that he and Sandy would soon be reunited.

Many of the 80s kids grew up watching Grease and this is possibly one of their favorite movies. It has an excellent storyline and fantastic music. It’s an entertaining musical that makes you want to get up and dance. This is a great rainy day movie to watch as it will lift your spirits through the roof.

16. Pretty In Pink (1986)

Pretty in Pink tells the story of Andie, one of the unpopular girls in her high school. She spends most of her time with her buddies Iona and Duckie. Duckie has always had feelings for her, but she has recently met a new boy at school.  She must choose between dating her childhood sweetheart and a wealthy but sensitive playboy.

This film has an amazing cast and some fine acting that should have made it a teen classic from the 1980s. Pretty in Pink screams the 80s, it has a certain vibe attached to it. If you grew up or experienced that era, then this movie will take you back.

A reason why we put this film after Grease is that this movie was also filmed at the same school where Grease was filmed.

15. Forrest Gump (1994)

Credit: Paramount Movies

Forrest Gump tells the story of a simple boy with a low IQ who just wants to live a peaceful life alongside his love interest. However, life takes him through various stages, including the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, and various historical events.

This movie requires no introduction, as most of us have watched it. However, this is also one of the most popular rainy day movies. It is a roller coaster of emotions and gives us the same joy every time we rewatch it.

The film has it all, drama and humor. Moreover, this film has inspired many of us not to give up and keep running.

14. Weird Science (1985)

Weird Science is another cult-classic flick from the 80s and another movie from John Hughes. In this film, Two unpopular nerds use their computer and a little bit of magic to create a flawless woman named Lisa, who helps them acquire popularity.

This film is literally an 80s time capsule. It fulfills the checklist of every 80s comedy: at least one hot woman, a slew of dashing eighties outfits, a corny eighties soundtrack, and a slew of cheap (but) humorous gags.

Weird Science is an easy-to-watch movie and is definitely one of the finest rainy day movies.

13. Jurassic Park (1993)

Jurassic Park is probably one of the most famous and influential 90s movies. A rational paleontologist touring an almost finished amusement park on an island is charged with protecting two children after a power outage forces the park’s cloned dinosaurs to run wild.

In addition to the groundbreaking VFX, this film has an engaging storyline, and the cast is iconic. Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neil, and Laura Dean all do a fine job in their respective roles. If you haven’t watched this masterpiece by Steven Spielberg, you’re missing out.

This is one of the best rainy day movies purely because of its nostalgic value.

12. Back To The Future Trilogy (1985-1990)

One of my personal favorite sci-fi franchises is Back To The Future Trilogy. The story revolves around a high-school kid and a crazy scientist who builds a time machine. They travel across various timelines to fix the blunders caused by their time traveling mishaps.

It’s a completely feel-good picture that’s pleasant from the first to the 100th time you see it and never fails to make you smile. Moreover, this movie perfectly blends humor and science fiction.

The Back To The Future Trilogy has set the norm for most movies dealing with the subject of time travel. Many sci-fi comedies in general also follow the blueprint for this film.

11.  Wizard Of Oz (1939)

We are taking a break from the 80s in our list of rainy day movies to travel to the early days of movies. We will talk about the first-ever colored feature film called Wizard of Oz.

The story revolves around Dorothy Gale and her dog who are swept away from their Kansas farm by a storm to the magical Land of Oz. Here, they embark on a journey with three new companions to visit the Wizard, who may return her to her home.

Aside from its historical impact, this film is purely magical. It will help you through a rainy day with its humor, music, and innocent storyline.

10. The Breakfast Club (1985)

We are back in the 80s as we discuss the next entry on our list of rainy day movies. The Breakfast Club revolves around a group of students in detention. It seems as if they’ve nothing in common. However, as time passes they all realize that they’re all more common than they think.

This film is pure nostalgia and a delight to watch. The director has created such a magnificent atmosphere and vibe throughout the movie.

Most of the high school teen movies in the 80s lacked one thing which is character development. However, The Breakfast Club shines in that area. Despite it having a huge cast, it manages to flesh out each character over the span of its runtime.

9.  Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971)

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory revolves around a poor but optimistic child who searches for one of the five prized golden tickets that will take him on a tour of Willy Wonka’s enigmatic chocolate factory.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a timeless classic. The set design of this film was insane for its time. We have all wanted a tour of this delicious factory once in our lifetime.

This entire film is very cozy and comforting. It is one of the best rainy day movies as it gives you a feel-good vibe. Moreover, you can watch this with your family as well.

The Princess Bride is a delightful romantic movie. In this movie, Buttercup, a princess, falls madly in love with Westley, a peasant. Unfortunately, their lives are turned upside down when Westley goes out in quest of work and is ambushed by a pirate.

Cast Away’s storyline revolves around Chuck Nolan who is stranded on a remote island after a tragic plane disaster. Chuck must discover methods to survive in his new habitat because he has no way of escaping.

You can’t go wrong with this one. Cast Away is one of Tom Hank’s finest works. It is clear to see how much effort he has put into this role. Pair his brilliant acting with the well-written storyline and you’ve got yourself a timeless masterpiece.

The film is inspiring and truly demonstrates what the human is capable of when pushed to its limits – the ultimate hopeful message for a gloomy day.

6. Harry Potter Franchise (2001-2011)

The Harry Potter Franchise consists of a total of 7 movies. The story revolves around a boy named Harry Potter as he finds out that he’s a wizard and the movies showcase his academic career at Hogwarts.

The Harry Potter films are one of my favorite comfort films. I always end up having a marathon of these movies at least once during winters. There’s a certain comfort for me in these movies and I am sure that I’m not alone.

I wouldn’t advise you to watch all of these movies in a single day, however, you can choose your favorite entry and make your rainy day better.

5. Spirited Away (2001)

Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away tells the story of Chihiro as she journeys through an unknown land in order to save her parents and return home.

Spirited Away has a lot going on for it. The art is beautiful, the music is delightful, the storyline is engaging, and a lot more. This entire movie feels like a gift from Miyazaki himself. Every little detail about it is carefully crafted.

This film can give you a lot of comfort and warmth if you watch it more than once. You will relate to at least one character every time and that is the beauty of this film.

4. Titanic (1997)

You must be living under a rock if you haven’t watched the Titanic yet. In this film, Rose, a seventeen-year-old from an affluent family, is about to marry. When she boards the Titanic, she meets artist Jack Dawson and falls in love with him.

Everything about this film was huge and grand, from the cast to the production and set design. This movie shattered every box office record upon its initial release and held the title of box office champion for many years.

This timeless love story can be enjoyed by almost everyone. You can also watch this movie to lift up your spirits on a gloomy rainy day.

Next up on our list of rainy day movies is Mary Poppins. Mr. Banks is seeking a nanny for his two unruly children when he discovers Mary Poppins, an angelic nanny. She not only makes a difference in their life, but she also transmits joy.

Mary Poppins is a movie that everyone should watch once in their lifetime. It is harmless and fun to watch. Moreover, despite it being targeted toward a young audience, adults can also have a great time watching it.

This film was immortalized by Julie Andrews’ performance as Mary Poppins. Additionally, the visual effects were quite interesting to watch and the soundtrack is also soulful.

How can we not talk about a movie literally about Singin’ in the Rain on our list of rainy day movies? It is set in 1920s Hollywood. A silent film star falls for a chorus girl just as he and his delusionary screen companion are undergoing the challenging transition to talking movies.

Aside from the more serious components of the narrative, Singing in the Rain is a huge hit as a musical and a romance. It also has an amazing Technicolor aesthetic and is very hilarious.

Singin’ in the Rain is a beautiful movie in terms of visuals and storyline. It is definitely one of the finest musicals Hollywood has ever produced.

1. Casablanca (1942)

Speaking of great musicals, we are closing our list of rainy day movies with Casablanca. During WWII, Rick, a Casablanca nightclub owner, decides to help his old sweetheart Ilsa and her husband. Ilsa’s feelings for Rick soon return, and she finds herself falling in love with him again.

Casablanca, widely regarded as one of the finest films ever produced, is perfect for watching on a rainy day. The film will play with your emotions. The rain outside nicely complements the scene of Rick reading Ilsa’s letter while getting drenched and waiting for a train.

Overall, it is a masterpiece of filmmaking and I highly recommend you watch it.

Conclusion

So this was our list of rainy day movies. We hope now you enjoy all of these movies as you’re confined to your room on a rainy day.
